Respiratory medicine covers everything to do with the breathing system: the lungs, diaphragm, nose, throat, larynx and windpipe (trachea).
Our consultants and respiratory nurses look after people with a range of conditions, from asthma to lung cancer. We provide acute care for patients with a variety of respiratory conditions. In addition, we provide outpatient clinics, an advisory service and education for healthcare professionals as well as an advisory service and education for patients.
We do this in hospital on our dedicated wards but also through clinics and home visits to patients coping with long-term respiratory disorders.

PIFU appointments are a new type of appointment for the North Devon Respiratory team.
Instead of routine follow up appointments, you will have a ‘PIFU appointment’ with us. This means that if you develop a concern or problem related to your respiratory condition or its treatment you can call us to book an appointment to see a doctor.
Your respiratory doctor will have informed you within your last appointment that you have aÌý ‘PIFU appointment’ with us and shared a patient information leaflet with you.
‘PIFU appointments’ are not suitable for all our Respiratory patients and if you have a respiratory appointment booked please ensure you attend.
Our respiratory doctors will be happy to discuss the option of a PIFU appointment within your next appointment.
We have introduced ‘PIFU appointments’ to improve the service we offer our patients. It means we won’t be asking our patients to make unnecessary trips to the hospital at times when you are feeling perfectly well and symptom-free.
‘PIFU appointments’ enable us to offer flexible and responsive appointments to our patients at a time when they need it.
To book a ‘PIFU appointment’ either complete theÌýPIFU Appointment Follow upÌýform belowÌýor phone our Respiratory team onÌý01271 349589.
